Surprisingly, only one chamber work by Mahler survives today (a piano quartet), along with a multitude of well-loved vocal works and symphonies. In an effort to bring Mahler's gorgeous music into the flute repertoire, Komfeil has chosen five of Mahler's songs best suited for the instrument. Knowing that these settings without text present new challenges for performers, the melodies of Mahler translate no matter the instrumentation.
