A Far, Far Better Thing… is a fictional musical narrative, telling the story of self sacrifice. At the beginning of the work, we find someone who is about to face something they will not survive. A friend appears and decides to take his place in order to save his friend. The title of this work comes from the final words of Charles Dickens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities. Within the final words of the novel, Sydney Carton takes the place of Charles Darnay, who was going to be executed. I hope that performers and audiences alike will take time to remember those who gave themselves for others, whether in small or large ways.
