This suite uses three traditional songs either written or used by Robert Burns. The first, "O Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad" captures the youthful excitement of a secret flirtation; it is lively and light in style with plenty of dynamic contrast. The second, and most well known is "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose"; this features a semplicesolo quartet verse, as well as more expressive tutti sections. The final song is the somewhat manically triumphant "I Ha'e a Wife o’ My Ain" which races by in a fugal style.
