The dance of the Polka has a significant history in the world of music. Originating in what is now the Czech Republic, it became a popular dance form, not just in the Czech Republic but also in Europe and the Americas. The Polka first appeared in Bohemia in 1844 by a young Bohemian woman by the name of Anna Slezakova. She was reportedly noticed dancing in quite a peculiar manner to accompany a local folk song. The dance started to become more popular and eventually became a local dance soon popularized in Europe and the Americas.
A Little Polka is for Solo Oboe and Piano to illustrate the small chamber forces of bands that provide the music. It is bright, chipper, and slightly virtuosic with the Solo Oboe playing skillful polka-like melodies with the Piano accompaniment providing a dancing bass dancing rhythm. This is the first of two pieces dedicated to Luxembourgian Oboist and Composer Felix Turrion Eichler.
