Dedicated to the Rockwall, Texas Community Band - "A Monday Overture" is a work for intermediate concert bands. It begins with a bold fanfare statement in the trumpets, followed by runs in the woodwinds that lead into a softer flute transition. Trumpets lead a pulsing background into a tutti statement, followed by a saxophone run that brings in the main chorale of the piece. The woodwinds speak the theme, and the brass answers, with a soft ending by muted trumpets and quiet horns. The low brasses take over in a rapid 3/4 section to introduce a flute melody, which is shouted back by the brass. Saxophones slow down the driving ensemble and bring back the chorale in a bold restatement of the theme in a lower key. Bells and timpani ring out to signal the end of the work in all its glory.
