The folk song-like melody stated by the 1st violins depict a long pioneer as he sets out on his journey. Quickly joined by other adventurers, violin 2 and viola create a harmonic outline with open-string double-stops. The ensemble soars with energy as the melody is heard over punctuated figures depicting the new excitement in the West. A final vigorous and fiddle-like phrase in the high strings over open fifths in the low strings concludes the piece with intensity. This one is very spirited!
