A Rainy Night in Brooklyn

Imagine a walk through the city while the rain drizzles against your umbrella and you cautiously avoid the puddles on the New York streets. It's a lonely walk and it's cold, but it's not without its charms. The sounds of jazz can be heard on the wind and there's a strange but calm familiarity as you pass the old neighbourhood buildings. The street lamps give a dull lustre to the plaintive evening as you trudge on your way, through a rainy night in Brooklyn. While this works calls for a trumpet with a harmon mute, it can alternatively be played with a flugelhorn. This allows for different sonic interpretations of the piece and allows the performer some creative license. Expressive melodic lines give the performer a chance to show off tone quality, articulation, and artistic nuance. While written in common time, it frequently shifts to an 8/8 feel, which presents a different rhythmic feel.
