A Splash of Purple was written in memory of an eighth grade violist named Amaris whose favorite color was purple. The first theme is based on a song she created and sang regularly called "Pancakes and Waffles". The pancakes and waffles rhythm permeates this first upbeat section. The contrasting second section is based on the motive "Glamorous Amaris", one of her nicknames and wavers around Lydian Mode. Throughout this section, the moving eighth notes should be predominant as they are passed from instrument to instrument.
