"If Forever Were Enough" is an elegy on the loss of a father. Written with accessibility in mind, Fonzi's writing features a piano soloist with band accompaniment and offers a haunting, heart-wrenching meditation on love, loss and overcoming grief. Young ensembles and audiences alike will find it difficult to perform this piece with dry eyes, and it serves as a powerful way to connect students to the depth and majesty that music can bring within our souls.

These immortal words serve as inspiration for this serene, beautiful reflection on the majesty of life. Creating warm, rich soundscapes utilizing only seven notes and accompanying harp (keyboard) chords, this piece masterfully delivers heartfelt lyricism with exceptional accessibility for young ensembles. Beginning and ending with a quiet, reflective alto recorder solo and building to a climactic statement of the A theme, "The Earth Is My Altar" is an excellent way to introduce lyricism that will leave a lasting impact on students and audiences alike.

The Earth Is My Altar

Flame Falls Fanfare is a fanfare for beginning band is inspired by the eternal flame falls located in Chestnut Ridge Park in western New York. A small grotto at the base of the waterfalls emits natural gas, allowing for a natural eternal flame to be lit. The concept of an eternal flame has fascinated me for years- I view it as a symbol of the enduring spirit within us all.

 

This piece has been carefully constructed to give every beginning band student the opportunity to experience the thrill of the fanfare. From big, marked accents to light staccatos and a more legato section beginning at C, there are endless teachable moments throughout- all while laying easily on the fingers and allowing your ensemble to work on quarter note rhythms and rests together. With a duration less than two minutes, I'm certain this piece will make a thrilling opener for your first concert!

Flame Falls Fanfare

Built on a series of ostinati, "The Groove" is a G minor jam-style tune that will get heads moving and feet tapping. Featuring only quarter notes and rests, and the first six notes with a fair amount of repition, this piece gives beginners a catchy way to focus on continued fundamental development. The true "groove" comes from the percussion parts, where much of the writing is meant to emulate a drumset. Teamwork and excellent collaboration will be necessary to pull this piece off, and if you are short on percussionists I'd recommend cutting the following in order: all mallets except bells (or play the entire part on xylophone if you prefer), crash cymbal, triangle, tambourine, suspended cymbal, hi-hat, bells. It is my sincere hope that you and your band have a blast with this tune, and I would like to apologize to any directors who will be hearing these ostinati for months as the kids play them endlessly! But for what it's worth, this is the sound of joyful music-making and successful teaching.

 Emily Dickinson's famous poem about hope served as the inspiration for this concert march for young musicians. As
 Dickinson describes hope as a beautiful, feathered creature that perches within us and sings unwaveringly, this march is
 inherently melodic but just as unrelenting as this wondrous songbird is described to be. I certainly hope the energy and
 persistence of this tune will match the unrelenting spirit of you and your ensemble!

The Thing With Feathers

The Pharaoh flees a coup and descends deep into the labyrinth of an ancient pyramid for answers to his lineage and the secrets of royalty! Our hero has entered this maze out of a desperate desire to escape death, but will he find what he seeks here or will discover something for more sinister as he descends deeper into the darkness? The programmatic nature of this work is sure to awaken the imaginations of your students as you venture through the epic tale woven throughout this piece and perhaps uncover some hidden secrets within it for yourselves...

 

Many of the divisis written in this piece are entirely meant to provide you with options based on your instrumentation and the strengths/weaknesses within your ensemble. This piece explores some fascinating harmonies and techniques, and it may be well worth it to dive into those things early on in the piece and sequence carefully. For many groups, this will be their first five minute piece, so it'll be important to observe dynamics, follow your conductor closely and tell the epic story in your mind through your playing. Most importantly, enjoy the thrill and the journey of this piece and let your imagination run wild!

Pharaoh's Descent

"Legend of Prometheus" was written as homage to the Ancient Greek deity whose story supposes that Prometheus stood as the "flame-bearer" for humanity. A symbol of intellect, technology and civility, the legend tells of this "god of fire" who foiled Zues's plot to destroy humanity and create a second subservient species by stealing a flame from Olympus and delivering it to humanity itself. As a result, Prometheus was punished for all time by Zeus, condemned to having an Eagle eat his liver everyday for eternity. There are many interpretations of this parable, with a popular western interpretation telling a cautionary tale of the consequences of over-reaching in our quest for scientfic knowledge. It is my hope that this piece may serve as a springboard into many engrossing conversations in the classroom, as well as set your student's imaginations ablaze. While writng the piece, I imagined the danger, heroism and sacrifice Prometheus made on behalf of humanity and the story unfolds in it's own way through the music. I'd encourage students to create their own stories and interpretations based on the music and imagine themselves as the hero of their own journey!
