Its words reflect the inner strength we all must find in ourself to keep pushing forward. Life is a journey that will always have its ups and downs, which further calls the need for one to keep fighting for what they want out of life. We must all give everything we have to create the lives we want for ourselves.

I Gave My All

On the Wayside was commissioned as a debut work for the Metro Voices Choir; an all-female led a cappella group built off the foundational Alexandria Harmonizers. The work encapsulates the idea that we must always continue to move forward in life and leave the people and issues in our lives that cause us grief on the wayside. It is meant to invoke a sense of personal power and triumph for all who adhere to its message.

Vinayaka is another name for the Hindu God Ganesh. The representation of this God is known for symbolizing protection and the removal of obstacles in one's life. When setting this idea to music, I wanted to bring forth the idea of longing to find one's path and how to can be traversed while eventually all resolving as it should in the end. Through the string orchestra, I was able to add to the long tradition of utilizing the strings for longing, passionate phrases.

This work is meant to emulate the idea of finding one's self through the forces of nature. The piano accompaniment serves to emulate the ever changing winds while the voices explore the aspects of personal growth. The Earth being all of our home serves me as a grounding technique that we are all on this planet to work together. We may stray far from our home and often times feel lost, but if we just listen to the wonders nature around us has to offer, we can always find our way back to our home.

I have long been fascinated with setting old Latin texts to music; particularly ones outside of the traditional sacred poetry found in the various requiems that have been composed throughout the centuries. Rather, I was particularly drawn to a poem written by the Roman poet Catullus. Simple in nature, the poem is only 3 phrases yet delivers a strong message of the turmoil found in the human psyche. "Odi et Amo" translates to "I hate and I love". The poem embellishes the poets struggle to balance the extremes of the human emotion and how torturous it can be to navigate 2 of our strongest emotions. The call of the opening "Odi et Amo" is repeated numerous times throughout the piece to drive home the 2 emotions of Hate and Love.
The work commands exceptional precision of intonation between the 8 parts. While slow in nature though its tempo, the piece has numerous harmonic classes of 2nds to create not only tension, but a longing passion desperate for resolution.

This piece is a reimagining of the classic folk song "Oh Shenandoah"; one of my favorite traditional folk melodies. It features a divisi SATB choir along with a tenor soloist. The piece starts with the tenor soloist and gradually introduces the different sections of the choir by verse until a climactic moment of full SSAATTBB harmony at the end of the 3rd verse before returning home to the soloist as the choir echoes the ever diminuendos of "Oh Shenandoah".
