A moving and inspirational concert work in nine movements that celebrates the light universal and the unity and dignity of all beings. About 30 minutes in duration, the work is scored for SATB chorus, soprano &amp; baritone solos, and piano 4 hands. The choral parts are quite approachable, with limited divisi in all parts; experienced soprano and baritone soloists are required. The texts are drawn from Genesis 1, Isaiah 60, Psalm 36, a prayer of St. Catherine of Siena; others are of the composer's own writing. Alas! Deceite, an anonymous Middle English lyric, is a somewhat  Shakespearean piece of advice: beware of the deceit of others - "truste  to thy selfe and lerne to be wise! This brief setting for SATB chorus (a  cappella), is appropriate for relatively advanced ensembles. It is the final  work in the composer's Suite of English Lyrics. Alas! Deceite

A setting for unaccompanied soprano of selected passages from Revelations of Divine Love, by the 14th15th century mystic Julian of Norwich. Her work is widely acknowledged to be one of the great Christian spiritual classics. It is also the earliest surviving book in middle English written by a woman. The "short text" was written soon after Julian recovered from a severe illness and describes sixteen visions that she had received: revelations of Christ's suffering and God's love. The second version ("long text") was written perhaps twenty years later; it is a greatly expanded volume  that includes her meditations on what she had been shown. This work begins with a spoken passage, the very first words of her work, directly followed by a soliloquy that includes some of Julian's best known quotations (e.g. "all shall be well"). I chose to adapt Julian's language into modern English, while remaining as faithful as possible to the style and intent of her original text.

A Revelation of Love

Soprano Solo

This approachable anthem is a setting of much-loved verses (Psalm 119: 33-40, 105): "Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes... Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light upon my path." The choir will enjoy its mixture of four-part harmonies, unison singing and passages where the text is traded off between the upper and lower voices.

These simple unison settings of the Great O Antiphons are ideal for an Advent service. They use a new English translation from the original Latin texts, dating back to at least the 8th century. The texts were adapted in possibly the 12th century to form the basis of the hymn Veni veni Emmanuel, now known O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  These settings may be sung a cappella or with a simple chordal accompaniment, e.g. harp, guitar or keyboard.

  appropriate for performance in concert or for sacred occasions. It was

Medium Solo

With a text adapted from various Psalms, this anthem creates an atmosphere of reflection and consolation. It is perhaps most suitable for a worship service. The tenors get to shine in an approachable range and there is some easy divisi for sopranos. My choir found it easy to learn.

God is Love

Featuring an atmospheric piano part and soprano solo, this is a highly effective arrangement of a favorite carol. Very accessible for amateur choirs, but rich in harmonies and voice movements that more advanced choirs will quickly appreciate. Wexford Carol

This dramatic setting of Wendell Berry's great poem is one of the movements of the composer's larger work A Timbered Choir. An experienced ensemble will appreciate how the occasional divisi in each voice part creates a rich choral harmony; and your accompanist will truly enjoy setting the mood for the choir.   the first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13. Dramatic and harmonically
  rich, it is suitable for a sacred setting or concert. Features a challenging
  but rewarding part for an advanced accompanist.

The Greatest of These Is Love

On a Forest Path is the final movement of the composer's larger work, "A Timbered Choir," settings of poems by Wendell Berry. It depicts various scenes that the poet encounters on his walks through the woods, and his reflections upon them. The piano takes on the role of the poet. The text consists of nine brief poems, composed at different times; several of them are only single line in length. The choral episodes are very approachable, with only a few moments of divisi, primarily for the sopranos. On a Forest Path

This graceful and spritely setting of the Middle English lyric Ich Am of  Irland is perfect for highlighting true Irish flavor. The work is basically a  canonic dance for three soprano voices, and may be sung by either soloists or  groups. Appropriate for intermediate ensembles. The setting of the Lord's Prayer is very expressive and quite accessible for amateur choirs. It was composed for an unaccompanied SATB choir and contains a few measures of simple divisi in the soprano part. A rehearsal keyboard reduction is included. Duration: about 2 1/2 minutes.

Our Father, Who Art in Heaven

This set of eight works for chorus are settings of poems by Wendell Berry: writer, farmer, environmental activist, cultural critic and one of the important voices of our time. Deep River

Light of Heaven, set for SATB with soprano solo, is a movement from the composer's cantata, Children of the Light. The piano establishes the tone of this highly atmospheric work, which gives each voice part the opportunity to sing lyrical and meditative melodic lines. The piece is based upon the composer's own mantra, which grew out his interest in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Suitable for both concert and sacred settings.
