This advanced-intermediate clarinet quartet arrangement of Felix Mendelssohn's "Adagio-Allegro (Mvmt I)" from his Streichersinfonie Nr. 8 is a wonderfully challenging piece, perfect for recitals, contests/competitions, weddings, graduation ceremonies, music conferences, and background-dinner-music gigs. It was written for advanced ensembles, from college groups to professional quintets.
This movement features a beautiful, mysterious opening with dotted rhythms that segues into a lively, spirited section full of dynamic contrast, a Bach-like counterpoint, and fiery technical passages. Although Mendelssohn wrote this piece when he was only 13, it already demonstrates his unique compositional style, blending Baroque and Classical influences.
Performance Tip: In this piece, remember that, although technically demanding, articulations should be light and effortless. The Allegro is all about forward motion with lots of energy.
Originally scored for string orchestra, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds. This dynamic, spirited arrangement from a popular, prolific German composer will bring a taste of Europe to your special music events.
