Highland Hearts

The Vermilion River runs through Lafayette, Louisiana. This piece is a postcard homage to the people and culture of the area and to the pastoral beauty and serenity of the river itself.  The piece is lyrical and majestic in scope yet playable and tuneful.  Hymn-like melodic materiel builds to a short Oboe solo with woodwinds and then a beautiful ending.

Vermilion River Serenade

"Mountains Rising Everywhere" is a deeply personal homage to Joseph Schwantner's "And the Mountains Rising Nowhere", which inspired the author to pursue composition after hearing it in college. Drawing on a transformative trip to Alaska with Composing in the Wilderness, the work captures the unexpected beauty of nature, from towering mountains to the delicate, intricate tundra underfoot, reminding us that adventure is often found in the most surprising places.

A high school concert band will find plenty to explore in this folk song arrangement with a lush, lyrical character that encourages expressive playing. The gradual build leads to several powerful impact moments supported by meaningful percussion writing and a mid‑piece key change. Low brass writing offers depth, and a closing trumpet cadenza provides a tasteful solo opportunity.

Slow, lyrical writing shapes this expressive piece for wind ensemble that features frequent exposed lines and a variety of solo moments. The music gradually intensifies toward a resonant peak marked by a key change, offering a strong expressive outlet for developed high school groups.

A Life Well Played

The music reflects the waves of memory that one experiences when contemplating the deepest of thoughts. First nebulous, sometimes sharply focused, resonating motifs, highs and lows. The four-chord chaconne figure is the unifying core of the work. It grounds the various melodies as they enter and return, sometimes densely paired, sometimes transparently isolated. The themes are structured as an arch form ABCBA, but as they recur, they are added together, giving them more density, as if the memories overlap, before the calmness, first heard as an ethereal haze recurs.

Essence of Memory

A spirited reimagining of the carol Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella" combined with the hymn Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. A brisk tempo, jaunty 7/8 meter, and fanfare-like brass passages make this work an ideal holiday concert opener.

Adoration Overture

An advanced wind ensemble work leans toward creating an atmospheric soundscape shaped by constant meter and tempo changes that create a fluid, free‑form character. The writing incorporates many modern techniques such as meterless cadenzas and highly intricate rhythmic passages. This evocative reflection on the Alaskan tundra and its fragile environmental state is a strong fit for collegiate groups.

Elegy for the Alaskan Tundra

Inspired by an adventure trip into Lake Clark National Park, this work for Grade 4 or 5 band captures the excitement and drama of a bush-plane flight through the stunning mountains of Alaska's southern range.

Alpine Flight

Exploring themes of love, loss, and the profound significance of artifact and memory, this piece was written as a collection of sounds that serves as a vehicle to transport the mind through space and time – to a place, a person, a moment. The interplay of sounds mirrors an internal dialogue about objects and the memories they hold.

The Sonata was a commission by the Texas Music Teachers Association, written in 2003. In this 20-minute work, the three movements were titled after the notes had been written, and Lias chose titles descriptive of the music: 1. "Wide Blue Run;" 2. "Memory Dance;" 3."Kludge March." While the middle movement is somewhat introspective, the outer movements are full of the joy of music-making. For advanced performers.
