Italian composer, singer, and violinist Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen learned violin at an orphanage for girls, even taking lessons from composer Giuseppe Tartini. By 1767, Maddelena was touring with her husband, renowned violinist Ludovico Sirmen. As talented a composer as performer, Maddelena is thought to have been the first woman to compose string quartets. This charming Allegro from String Quartet No. 2 has been transposed to accessible G major while retaining the spirit and energy of the original work.
