Performance Notes ***** Andalusian Pavane for is intended for students who are in their second year of study. They should be secure with all pitches in the E natural minor scale in first position. The tempo will be stately as it pertains to the courtly dance known as the Pavane. Written using the simplest of music materials, it is designed to provide studies in these areas of performance: 1. Legato and marcato bowing 2. Independent part playing and balance 3. Crescendo and decrescendo 4. Ritard al fine requiring a watchful eye on the conductor The main theme is first stated by 1st Violins at m. 9. A brief connecting passage at m. 17 leads to a restatement of the main theme (m.21) by 2nd Violins, Violas and Celli. Here the 1st Violins have a countermelody. The contrasting section at m. 33 is marked forte and marcato and will require bowing to that effect. At m. 41 a 4-bar crescendo leads to a forte restatement of the main theme with countermelody. The concluding section at m. 63 (rit. al fine) will require students to follow the conductor closely. Mm. 67 and 68 will need great dynamic contrast to be effective. A rehearsal piano part and a Violin 3 (Viola) part are included. Thank you for choosing this composition. I trust you and your students will find it an enjoyable and worthwhile study. Sincerely, Joseph Compello April, 2024
