The Piano Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op. 14, No. 2, was composed in
1798-1799. This was one of Ludwig van Beethoven's early works, dedicated to
Baroness Josefa von Braun, one of his patrons of that time. Here the Andante
(2nd movement) has been abridged and transposed for Concert Band from C Major
to Eb Major. This Andante is in the
form of Air and Variations beginning with an alternating 2 bar rhythm with
contrasting ideas. After variations first with syncopation and later with a
persistent sixteenth note figure, the piece seems about to end quietly, but
then concludes abruptly with a crashing fortissimo E flat major chord.
