For most pieces I compose, the greatest struggle is finding a theme which I find so significant, I feel it can be, and needs to be expressed through music. Compounding this struggle with the lack of motivation to get out of bed in the morning throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, let alone to get meaningful work done, writing music has felt like such a daunting task that it is agonizing to begin. The process for this piece definitely started in that manner, but through conversations with Sam Wetzel, who commissioned this piece, this piece has become one of the most meaningful pieces I have been able to write throughout the pandemic. 
Sam and I, having spent many summers working at Rodney Scout Reservation, share in a common experience and bond that can only be understood by those who have lived it. Working on summer camp staff is the most tiring, grueling and exhausting job I have ever done. Working ninety to hundred hour weeks, being responsible for ten through seventeen year olds, not sleeping enough and being severely underpaid yet, even with all of that, and I think Sam would agree with me, it is by far the most rewarding job I have ever held. 
This piece clicked for me when Sam mentioned to me that his favorite part about camp are the people. The fact that in ten weeks of a summer camp season, we form bonds so strong that when we see those familiar faces, it is like no time has passed no matter how long we have been apart. This theme of personal connection resonated with me even stronger in this time where my physical, human interaction is so minimal I would give anything to be paid a dollar an hour for backbreaking work to go back to camp for a week and experience that feeling of togetherness again. 
Through this piece, I convey those feelings that I hold on to, longing for togetherness, warm summer days, and human interaction, as we struggle in isolation through this pandemic. I hope those who are experiencing similar emotions are able to take some solace through this music as we wait until the day we can be physically present again with one another. I am so grateful to Sam for allowing me to write this piece for him, giving life to my music, and allowing me to go through some much needed self reflection through this writing process.

Inspired by the story of "Till Eulenspiegel," which Strauss famously set to a tone poem, this exciting work for beginning band is a great way to introduce your students to 3/4 time. The Jester is represented by the theme initially stated by the woodwinds, and the judge, attempting to imprison the Jester, is voiced by the low brass section. When the judge thinks he has finally has the Jester trapped, the Jester pulls one last trick out of his bag as he makes his escape!

My Brass Quintet No. 2 is a musical reflection and meditation on living through the Covid-19 pandemic in four movements. The pandemic affected everyone differently and musically I looked to give everyone something to relate to. I struggled to compose for the greater part of the pandemic, I was overwhelmed by feelings of dread and anxiety. During the pandemic, I was able to take my dog Evie for long walks every day through Fairfax, as I was home every day and could not go out to do anything else. On these walks I remember seeing new green appearing on trees as spring began and having a hymn tune, "Soon the Green Blade Rises" getting stuck in my head. This idea that spring will always come kept me sane through the darkest days of the pandemic, and I hope this is the feeling listeners will leave with after hearing this piece, no matter how long it may take for that spring to come. I took much of my inspiration during my composition process from Chip Kidd's The Cheese Monkeys: A Novel in Two Semesters. This piece is meant to evoke strong emotions and reactions, so as a listener, allow yourself to be present and feel any and all of the emotions. Performers, please pay careful attention to all performance notes throughout the piece, every action is a part of the music during this piece. I would like to dedicate this piece to all who lived through the Covid-19 pandemic, and to the memory of all who were lost.

In composing Tranquil Waters my goal was to take advantage of the incredible
performers I had at my disposal, Erin Rodgers, saxophone, and Christopher Graham, percussion,
and explore extended technique on their instruments. I found that this was no longer a piece
which I could create using the language of pitch and rhythm, so I relied on sounds and timbre to
guide the piece and my form.
Through Tranquil Waters I explored the sounds and feelings I associate with water.
Having grown up on Long Island, NY, and spending many of my summers working at Boy Scout
Summer Camps throughout high school and college, I focused on two bodies of water I hold near
and dear to my heart, the Ocean and a Mountain lake. The first movement Ocean View on a Gray
Winter's Day was inspired by the images in my mind of a rough sea pounding against a snowy
beach, the juxtaposition of the calmness of snow, the roughness of the Northern Atlantic, and the
seagulls flying overhead created my mental soundscape from which to pull from. Misty
Mountain Lake at First Light, the Second Movement, was not inspired so much as the sounds
one would hear there, but the sheer excitement and subsequent calmness one can only feel by
waking up next to a cold mountain lake, as I do every time I have that opportunity.

This piece is my musical reflection on my time in North Cascades National Park in
August of 2021, my first time being in this part of the country. Being from the east coast, I
frequent the Appalachian Trail and surrounding hiking areas to get away from my busy life and
reflect. The Appalachians are some of the oldest mountains in the world, and as such, I have
grown accustomed to hiking through the "green tunnel" as hikers affectionately dub trails in
Appalachia where you can hike endlessly through forests for a single view. This was not the case
in North Cascades. I felt immediately transported to a time and place untouched by human
civilization. Ahead of me were towering mountains, and on either side of the valley I hiked
through, waterfalls thousands of feet high flowing straight from the glaciers which continually
form and shape this region. It was an almost primal feeling where I felt close to those who first
inhabited the land, as if those who walked this path thousands of years ago would find what I
saw familiar. As the day went on however, more traces of human civilization and that impact on
the environment became visible. There was a constant smell of burning pine, and a haze which
descended from wildfires that were ravaging the west coast, and a bulldozer working to rebuild a
washed out water crossing. The feelings I still am left with are those of hope, but also anxiety,
hoping that we can continue to preserve these magical places for future generations to enjoy, and
be inspired by.

I composed this piece after working through the Walter Piston Counterpoint book. There are many elements of 18th/19th century contrapunctal techniques, however I worked to use these techniques within my own voice, including rhythmic counterpoint between 3/4 and 6/8 time. "Sonatina Chromatico" is a vibrant, exciting work, incoperating modern harmonies and contast modulations, perfect for any recital or solo contest.
