This woodwind quintet offers short vignettes on places through our solar system that I have found interesting &amp; exciting! The music features some technical challenges that can show off the performers' chops while maintaining an approachable, light, &amp; humorous tone throughout that will captivate the audience. 

Detailed program notes:

Six Celestial Miniatures was written in 2013 for my composition recital at the end of my fifth year at Lehigh University. I wished to pay homage to my love of astronomy by writing a series of miniatures based on select elements in our solar system that have always fascinated me.
I.
Ascent up Olympus Mons depicts a slow climb up the eponymous volcano, located on Mars, notable for being the largest volcano in our solar system.
II.
Triton's Geyser's refers to the many geysers of Neptune's moon Triton, which spew out jets of frigid nitrogen.
III.
Picnic on Io captures the image of what a picnic on Jupiter's intensely volcanic moon would be like... fiery, dangerous, fleeting, and highly unsuccessful.
IV.
Drifting towards Saturn is about the cold voyage through the emptiness of space, until the wonder of seeing the tremendous beauty of Saturn overwhelms the observer.
V.
Asteroids! imagines what flying through an asteroid field might be like, dodging particles of various sizes.
VI.
Pluto's Loneliness recaps the different images created in the piece through the sad eyes of Pluto, having been demoted from his status as a planet, and depicts his frustration with the world.

There Was So Much Singing Here

On Gilead Hill is a collection of 10 short organ pieces that I composed
  in my first two years
    
    as the new music director and organist at Gilead Congregational Church in
  Hebron, CT. These
    
    pieces are intended to be used in church service as preludes, postludes,
  offertories, or communion
    
    meditations. Two of the pieces are completely original, while the other
  eight use preexisting hymn
    
    or folk tunes as the inspiration for the music. The pieces are mostly
  contemplative in nature, but a few 
    
    are more triumphant and spirited.

On Gilead Hill

Organ Collection

This gentle anthem, based on the Seymour hymn tune, is suitable for
  general use or the Lenten season. It features accessible range and voice
  leading for all parts, as well as some natural metric shifts.

This contemplative setting of "Upp Min Tunga" has lush &amp;
  interesting harmony set in a delicate rhythmically meditative way.
  Appropriate for general use and for the Lenten season.

Praise the Savior, Now and Ever

Bold, lush, dramatic, &amp; vibrant.
When I started the first drafts of In a noisy world, I knew that I wanted to feature big contrasts in style that would run the gamut of emotional expression. I also wanted to highlight the versatility of the given instrumentation by balancing challenging and complex music with more accessible, lyric passages.
The piece is divided into three large sections. The outer sections juxtapose huge chaotic tuttis with a groovy main theme, while the inner section provides a rest from the chaos with a lush melodic section. The piece is primarily centered around a Cmaj9 sonority, but that main sonority is often challenged by Bmaj7+9 and Dbdom7+9 harmonic centers.
Programmatically, I wanted the music to suggest the multi-layered complexities of human emotion. Each of us, in some capacity, has struggled with identity, particularly during this age of constant distraction and stimulation. The interaction of the different musical passages is meant to represent an inner communication, trying find one's self amidst the turmoil of daily life.

In a Noisy World

Concert Band Score & Parts

This art song, commissioned by Sara Mellas for her senior vocal recital at the Hartt School in 2014, is a setting of a Rumi text. The powerful words tell a story of breaking away from the bonds of self-doubt and past trauma to embrace the beauty of what is possible in life. The song, while set originally for mezzo soprano, can be sung by tenor as well.
