Anishinaabeg, best translated as the "noble people," refers to many of the numerous Algonquin and related indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes region of North America. Here, it is used specifically in reference to the Ojibwe of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where the composer spent many summers. This symphonic tone poem evokes historic, pictorial and literary subject matter. The music conjures images of the wind gently blowing through the pines, the purling of meandering streams, the rippling and waving of grasslands, and thunderous waterfalls crashing over cliffs into Lake Superior.
