Principium et Finis is the opening movement of the choral symphony Apocalypsis Iesu, inspired by the opening vision of the Book of Revelation. The music follows St. John’s revelation of the Alpha and the Omega, unfolding as a sequence of proclamations, visions, and moments of suspended contemplation.
The orchestral writing alternates between monumental gestures and passages of stillness. Strings and piano frequently provide these moments of suspension, creating a sonic space in which the text can resonate with clarity. Against this background, the organ assumes a driving and structural role, marking the decisive points of the vision and reinforcing the proclamatory character of the work.
Although the movement stands independently, its dramatic arc ultimately finds completion in the subsequent movement, Arca Testamenti (Revelation 11), where John beholds the Ark of the Covenant revealed in heaven. Principium et Finis therefore functions as both proclamation and threshold: the opening of the vision that unfolds across the larger symphonic structure.
