Arches is a descriptive single-movement work. The title is double-edged: on one side, the music depicts the peaceful and airy grandeur of Arches National Park in Utah. On the other side, the musical structure can be considered an "arch-within-an-arch." The musical arch form is one in which the materials are presented in sequence, then repeated in reverse (A-B-C-B-A). Arches was written in 1984. It forms the beginning of an ongoing series of "Places in the West" pieces for wind ensemble, which also includes The Yellowstone Fires, Zion and Glacier. Duration: ca. 7'. Parts available on rental. Score, 39 p.
