Atom

Composed during her junior year at the University of Arizona, Sahasra's Atom reflects her exploration of fragmentation, and the relationship between motion and stillness in music. Conceived as a standalone movement within a broader, yet incomplete, cycle, Atom draws upon 21st-century compositional aesthetics, blending elements of post-tonal language. The title Atom evokes both the scientific and the philosophical referencing the smallest indivisible unit of matter while also hinting at the idea of musical material reduced to its most essential form. Through sparse textures, isolated tones, and moments of sudden energy, the piece oscillates between density and vacancy, suggesting an internal world of quiet tension and potential energy. Dynamic and unsettled, Atom captures the restless spirit of potential energy on the verge of transformation reflecting a fascination with movement, instability, and the raw materiality of sound itself.
