Ayshet Chayil (A Woman of Valor) is a setting of Proverbs 31 in Hebrew for baritone voice and band. It was commissioned was commissioned by the St. Mary's University Concert Band, Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, Director, through the Kaplan Foundation Commissioning Project. It was premiered by the band with baritone soloist Alan Dunbar and the composer conducting. The text praises the good wife and the ideal woman but the focus in not on her beauty or grace; instead it commends her intelligence, work ethic, wisdom, and more. These are the attributes that last and are deserving of praise. A tradition in many Jewish homes is for husbands to recite this Proverb to their wife before the Sabbath dinner in acknowledgement and praise of all their spouses do. In preparing the full band version for publication the composer has created this piano reduction so it may be used for rehearsals as well as for performance.
