"Air on the G String" is the popular name for the second movement of J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068. The name is not Bach’s, but comes from a popular19th-century arrangement that transposed the movement from D major to C major so that the melody could be played entirely on the G string by the first violins.
