Balkan Flight is an energetic work inspired by the vibrant dance traditions of the Balkans. Built on a driving complex meter and an exotic scale, the piece captures both the rhythmic vitality and distinctive melodic color of the region. Originally composed to accompany a film showcasing the beauty of hiking in the Carpathian Mountains, it has since been arranged for small mixed ensemble as well as adapted into a pseudo-jazz chart, complete with an improvisatory section playable by any ensemble. With its blend of folk-like energy and flexible scoring, Balkan Flight is not only an engaging concert piece but also a valuable pedagogical tool for introducing performers to complex meters and non-traditional scales.
