This new take on the Christmas spirit takes the first three stanzas from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s In Memoriam, canto XXVIII, and paints a provincial soundscape of a December English countryside, bleak and beautiful in its heavy snowfall. The voices serve as bells ringing the changes, exploring the variations of their tunes, with a background hum always present in their combined overtones - all in service to a sense of wistful nostalgia.

The composer carefully and cleverly depicts the pairs of opposites and then musically resolves them into one perfect whole. Each resolution rises to a new level so that the final concept, eternity, bursts forth at the point of highest tension. The final doxology and "amen" begins the rising trajectory again, this time finally wending its way back through foreign keys to a joyous conclusion in its beginning C major.

That and the interesting word painting in the vocal lines combine to make this work sound like a cloud of hovering butterflies.

Echoing repetitions, supported by a shimmering vibraphone, create the frosty soundscape of Sara Teasdale's poem as the voices strive to make a single song "as lovely and full of light, as hushed and brief as a falling star on a winter night."

I Should Be Glad

A classic hymn with a tender text from beloved hymn writer Fanny Crosby receives an expanded setting that is both accessible and interesting. A cappella, with some divisi, the piece migrates through several keys, finally coming to sweet rest in A-flat major. A beautiful choice for better choirs.

Safe in the Arms of Jesus

This is a choral mini-drama that, through intense and chaotic vocal lines and harmonies, depicts the emotions surrounding the Crucifixion. The text includes the last words of Christ as well as a elements that move the action along: the words of the crowd as it turns into a bloodthirsty, taunting mob; the statements of the two thieves; and the austere narrative passage "Erat autem fere hora sexta." A tremendous work for a talented and mature ensemble.

Barnett's artistic setting for treble choirs is joyful and whimsical with a sprightly piano part that portrays youthfulness and movement. Delightful!

Benjamin Franklin's early American creed is set in a rhythmic a cappella setting with an underlying ostinato for the basses, chanting "I Believe" throughout the piece. Mixed meter, and while soaring melodies and countermelodies in the upper voices present the text, the sturdy chant maintains the fervor and energy of the creed.
