Recorded in 1964, Duke Pearson's Wahoo! might not be as well known as some of his other works, but its musical content easily stands as one of his finest efforts. The album features brilliant contributions from an all-star band of Donald Byrd on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto sax and flute, Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums.
Every tune on the album is textbook Pearson - mellow, memorable and highly inviting, but also artistically creative and inspiring. There is also an impressive level of stylistic diversity among them. Amanda is a groovy boogaloo that would sound right at home on a Lee Morgan or Horace Silver record; Bedouin is an open-ended and experimental work that channels some of the recent modal developments in the jazz of the day; Wahoo is a catchy minor blues that hides its unusual 5/4 time signature extremely well; and E.S.P. is an old-fashioned swinger with a melody hook that ranks up with some of Pearson's best earworms.
All in all, Wahoo! offers a little something for everyone to enjoy regardless of their musical tastes. Jazz Lines Publications is proud to be able to present these arrangements for your performing and listening pleasure.
