Boom! is meant to be a comical piece. The overall approach to "Boom!" is to allow "shtick" to take place between the conductor and the soloist. Because the "opposites" of a lovely waltz and a booming bass drum are simply the backdrop, the orchestra is always the "straight man" while all of the possible shenanigans are really between the soloist and the conductor.
For this piece to work, humor is the operative word. The musical notation for the soloist is legitimate, leaving room for personal choices and creativity. In turn, if that means that improvisation might serve better at certain moments, by all means use it. Similarly, the words of attitude and expression (i.e. bored, clobber, etc.) are there as suggestions. Also, the personas of the soloist and conductor should play a large role perhaps best in opposition. For example, the conductor calls for the dynamic of "p" and gets the "f" dynamic. The conductor can gesture to the soloist - who doesn't respond; or vice versa. Think "Victor Borge!"
Simply put, have fun with it and your audience will too!
