This brilliant bebop arrangement was written by Carter in 1948. The band featured tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, and this arrangement is much in the style of the charts recorded by the bebop big bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Eckstine. Sometime after it was recoded the title was changed to "Harlequin Bounce." The reeds are featured playing the melody with the brass providing punching accents. This chart showcases some intricate unison lines in both reeds and brass. If your band can put it together, it would make a great festival or concert chart. The solos are for piano, trombone, tenor saxophone, and the solo alto. Instrumentation: Solo Alto Saxophone/Clarinet, AATTB Saxes, 5 Trumpets (Trumpet 5 Optional), 4 Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums. Ranges: Trumpets 1, 2 & 3 to Eb6, All Trombones to Bb4.
