"Bound for the Promised Land", also known as "On Jordan's Stormy Banks", is from a collection of hymns, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, published in 1835. The music was written by William "Singin' Billy" Walker and the text by Samuel Stennett. It begins with an optional soprano solo and adds sections until all voices have joined together. Although mostly in E minor, the piece is martial and exciting with a triumphant organ accompaniment. The key and the mood change in the third verse, moving to E major and a much slower tempo, to the joyous and comforting words, "And when I reach that happy land, I'll be forever blest, The Lord will lead me by the hand to my eternal rest." The excitement again builds with the final chorus coming to a rousing conclusion.
