Beneath the Ocean Waves is a piece that was composed as an emotional release from the near-lethal events suffered by my dog, Gunner. He suffered from an auto-immune disease that, if not treated correctly, slowly harmed him from the inside. The piece was tied to this event when he looked at me with crying eyes, pleading for help, as I felt helpless because I could not fix the problem. In the third incident, my parents and I decided that putting him down was the best choice to release him from this suffering, but none of us had the willpower to follow through with it. This piece was written in his memory but also represents my emotional response including how I wanted to ignore what was happening around me. 

The title, Beneath the Ocean Waves, refers to the harmonic progression, especially in the first measure, which reminded me of the ocean from underneath the water. When submerged, there is almost no motion except the currents moving around, and nearly no light because of the depth. The ending depicts the sinking feeling to the bottom of the ocean, where I could finally be at rest from what is happening above in the real world.

Faster Than Light is a thrilling musical journey that transports young musicians and listeners alike into the boundless realm of outer space. Designed for beginner string orchestra, this piece emphasizes steady rhythm and a consistent tempo, providing an excellent foundation for developing ensemble skills. The music evokes the electrifying moment when a spaceship powers up its engines, building anticipation with each pulse. As the energy intensifies, the ensemble propels forward, capturing the exhilarating sensation of breaking through the barriers of speed and soaring through the vast expanse of the cosmos.

Faster Than Light

The Wayfinder is a vibrant and energetic opener that captures the bustling energy of a city in motion. The piece paints a picture of crowded streets filled with cars and the constant noise of urban life. The rhythmic intensity and driving momentum create a sense of urgency and chaos, reflecting the disorienting experience of navigating through a city's maze of sounds and movement. Yet, The Wayfinder evokes a sense of determination and purpose, symbolizing the journey of finding one's path through the noise and complexity of the modern world.

Stargazing depicts the feeling of wonder and curiosity as you look up at the starry night sky. The first section focuses on combining the whole orchestra as one texture creating different colors and emotions with many close intervals of dissonance and some unexpected harmonic movements. The second section opens up with the theme in the violas, slowly growing in tension and anticipation for when the moment will peak. As the climax dies down, it moves back into the first section, closing the piece with an ending that is sure to put the audience at ease.

Stargazing

The American Frontier takes listeners back in time. The piece opens with the sunrise over the canyon, where the music illustrates views of majestic landscapes, from rolling prairies to rugged mountains and rushing rivers. The pioneers awaken and the energy grows as they venture out singing and whistling tunes back and forth to each other. The pioneers encounter thieves on their journey, with havoc and conflict erupting between the two groups. The thieves are eventually chased off, leaving the pioneers victorious. They celebrate their success before continuing with their expedition out into the furthest reaches of The American Frontier.

The American Frontier

A Fighting Spirit portrays an epic adventure through music and presents some of the many challenges performers encounter. Some moments are intense with growing anticipation of what is to come, while others are deceivingly calm, followed by a storm of fury and unexpected aggression. The "fighting spirit" is the group of performers who persevere through the challenges presented in each new section. The final section mixes all the previous sections, before charging to a victorious end.

<p>Chaotic Concoction is a musical depiction of the brewing of a potion, with each section of the string orchestra representing different ingredients coming together in an unpredictable and exciting process. The piece begins with a groovy section in 7/8, capturing the early stages of the brewing process where the ingredients are tossed in with a lively and uneven energy, reflecting the potion’s unstable nature. In the second section, the music shifts to a clockwork-like precision, where all the ingredients begin to work together in perfect synchronization. This section builds to a powerful climax, symbolizing the moment when the potion begins to take shape. The final section revisits the opening groove but with a heightened intensity and momentum. The piece drives toward an exhilarating conclusion, representing the release of its chaotic nature and then the concoction’s completion.</p>

Sara Trevor Teasdale's poems are described as being simplistic and clear by nature with passion throughout. The Falling Star is a brief poem that captures the brilliance and wonder of a shooting star. The piano sets the stage representing the twinkling night sky with a star falling from the rest. The style switches to a waltz as the star remains present for viewing, portraying the star in its full beauty before it disappears, forever to be gone.

Dedicated to Dr. Nancy Conley and the KSU Philharmonic Orchestra, Until We Meet Again is my musical farewell to them as I graduate. While it is a farewell, it is also a promise to return in the future. 

Until We Meet Again musically depicts the feelings and emotions of nostalgia, separation, anticipation, and reuniting once more. My intent for this piece is to touch the hearts of many, from fellow students and professors with whom I have worked and created music, to those who do not know me personally, and my family listening to their son's final KSU orchestra concert.

As I graduate and pursue new adventures, this is not a goodbye, this is Until We Meet Again.
