Winter is a celebration of the enchantment of a snow day. From the first flurries late at night into the morning, when you first peer outside and see the world blanketed in white, the excitement of heading out into a winter wonderland and playing in the fresh-fallen snow. Winter is a great secular winter concert piece to round out a program.

Winter begins with the brass blowing air through their instruments, creating a wind effect. The glockenspiel alludes to the first flakes falling from the sky. At rehearsal A, we look outside upon waking to see that it has snowed. Rehearsal B is our first venture out into the cold—the excitement of the first fallen snow and the eagerness to get out and play. Rehearsal E is a waltz reflecting a dance in the falling snow, a tender moment in the midst of the fun. Rehearsal G brings back our wind effect as the snow begins to fall more heavily. H sees the return of the main theme to close out the day.

Westward Bound is a tribute to my favorite Western film scores. From Silverado to modern examples of the genre, the Western has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. Capturing the sweeping landscape of the open frontier, the sense of adventure, and the raw beauty of the wilderness, Westward Bound seeks to capture the spirit of the Old West as it is represented in countless Hollywood classics. Bookended by the primary theme in an augmented rhythm, the piece moves from the first high-energy motif through a melodic section in the woodwinds. The third theme, presented by the trumpets, ties the two together before returning to the first theme. Westward Bound tells the story of the Great Westward Expansion, carrying all the hope, awe, and sense of adventure the cinematic western has always provided.

Leviathan is one of the great mythological sea monsters. This piece for wind ensemble depicts a battle between a ship and the sea serpent. This exciting, high energy work will spark the
imaginations of musicians and the audience alike.

The upper woodwinds and percussion represent the sea throughout the story. The brass play the role of the sailors as they set out on their journey, ultimately facing the great monster in a
storm. The Leviathan theme is played throughout as a 16th note run in the lowest voices. The introduction is the sunrise as our heroes prepare to go to sea, with rehearsal A being their
departure. At rehearsal B, the weather darkens as a storm sets in and Leviathan is sighted. The battle begins. Tensions rise and the sailors' uncertainty and returning conviction come through at rehearsal D. At E, the battle is Qinished. Our sunrise theme reappears in the Qlutes as the storm clears. After this tense and exciting battle concludes, it is left to the listener to decide who won.

Leviathan

Mourning was composed as reflection of the initial feelings associated with the loss of someone or something dear. The initial numbness and grief along with anger and disbelief, ultimately ending in a resigned acceptance. This piece is a powerful representation of the emotions associated with loss; something we all experience throughout life. 

The introduction begins with a solemn processional rhythm in pizzicato strings accompanied by a floating solo violin. A lamenting melody is presented as a pair of duets between English Horn and F Horn followed by Clarinet and Trumpet with the final phrase stated by English Horn, Clarinet, and 2 Horns. Woodwinds and strings take over with a solemn countermelody in the Bassoon and Cello. The processional rhythm returns in percussion joined by the low brass and horns, handing off to the woodwinds. The third section is a highlighted by a driving ostinato in the low strings highlighted by short stabs in the upper strings followed by the woodwinds and trumpets. This section has features an expanding use of frantic 16th notes first in the woodwinds and ending with the upper strings. The next section continues the processional with violins performing glissandi in contrary motion while clarinets perform only on the mouthpiece and barrel to create a mournful wailing effect. The closing section is a full orchestra statement of the main theme ending with fragmented statements of the theme in woodwind pairs over the processional ostinato in the basses.

HYMN for the Lost is a piece in tribute to all those who live with mental health issues and everyone who isn't sure where they are in life. Many of us get off track in the pursuit of our dreams and sometimes our minds seem to work against us. This piece reflects finding strength through our challenges, leveraging our unique gifts, and overcoming the struggle to rediscover our purpose. No matter how far we stray, or whatever setbacks we encounter, there is always hope. And hope is enough.

HYMN for the Lost

This piece for young band is a great addition to an end of year beginning band concert or as a sight reading piece for intermediate players. A simple melody, passed around the band, is accompanied by emphatic low brass and basic percussion. Careful doubling allows Prairie Sunrise to be performed without the full, scored instrumentation.

The Long Way Home is built off a single melody. The piece presentes the main theme in various fragments and permutations until its full presentation at the conclusion. Conceived as a reflection of the circuitous and meandering path many of us take to reach our goals, The Long Way Home takes the listener through the processes of dreaming about possibilities, the determined pursuit of one's goals with occassional moments of questioning and doubt, and ultimately to achievement, with the hint of a new pursuit to come.

String Orchestra Score & Parts

Bright New Day is a high-energy piece reflecting the optimism and hope of a new beginning. Every day is a chance for a fresh start and new possibilities. This piece would function great as a concert opener. 

The main theme is characterized by an ascending series of leaps with a more lyrical countermelody throughout. After a bright introduction, the woodwinds take control. A short chordal interlude in the trombones and horns, with a shimmering upper woodwind accompaniment, transitions to the trumpet section presenting the main theme with a new accompaniment figure in the low brass driving us forward. A short lyrical section moves to a percussion soli before culminating in a full band statement of the original theme. The piece ends with an uplifting build first in the low brass, then the horns, ending with the full ensemble.

Bright New Day

A driving, high-energy piece, The Fourth Horseman imagines the rise of the iconic character and his ride through the night. Based on a simple motif, the piece imagines a heroic attempt to keep the horseman at bay. Percussion represents the rider throughout. The winds represent the battle to thwart the Horseman's mission. Moments of resolve, anxiety, and determination bring this imaginative narrative to life. The piece is framed by 13 strikes of the chimes and ends with the departure of the Horseman, unsuccessful in bringing forth the great confllicts his presence portends. The Fourth Horseman is an exciting piece for musicians and audiences alike, sure to stoke the imagination of all.

Inspiration came about when I first learned of the passing of Robert W. Smith. Mr. Smith's work has had a profound impact on my musical development and for my appreciation of what literature fo rthe wind band could be. Inspiration is reflective, powerful, and triumphant. The opening section is a short chorale with an overlaid fanfare. The second section is a celebration of sorts, with the second, lyrical melody maintaining a sense of melancholic reflection. The final section is a triumphant declaration of the first theme. Inspired by the many great works by Mr. Smith that have been a staple of the repertoire through my development from middle school into my professional career, this piece is dedicated to the great composer and educator Robert W. Smith.

Inspiration

This piece is written for a small orchestra with rhythm section. Predominately in a Coban bolero style, with a short 7/8 Samba. Memoria de un Verano Olvidado, translates to Memory of a Forgotten Summer, features a solo section for the acoustic guitar and rich textures using extended techniques that build to its exciting conclusion. The bass part is intended to be played by a single player within the rhythm section, but could be performed by a section in some places. The part is fully realized for players who aren't comfortable reading changes.
