Bread and Roses

A powerful march for treble choirs, this piece was inspired by women's activism during the first decades of the 20th century. "Bread and Roses" was a political slogan that appeared initially in a speech by Helen Todd and later became the title of a poem by James Oppenheim set to music several times. Mimi Fariña's 1974 version was recorded by a number of folk singers; this arrangement was created in response to government sanctions against women's rights in the U.S. and around the world.
