"Brethren, Rise!" — a setting of the 19th-century American folk hymns "HOLY MANNA," "RESTORATION," and "PLEADING SAVIOR" — takes its name from lyrics accompanying two of the three tunes. The well-known lyric to "HOLY MANNA" begins with the words "Brethren, we have met to worship"; and the refrain of "RESTORATION" declares, "I will arise and go to Jesus." Aside from the lyrics and their Christian themes, the tunes themselves are exemplary of early American folk hymnody, with simple melodies that rise and fall through each phrase of the text.
