This Horn Duet tells the story of a fledgling's journey from nest to the sky! Movement I sees the arrival of the fledglings to the nest. Movement II finds the fledgelings impatiently waiting to grow in their wings so they may fly through the skies like their parents. Movement III sees the birds finally taking flight, fluttering around the skies and exploring the clouds.

Horn in F Duet

The "Hallelujah Chorus" from George Frideric Handel's Messiah has been a significant part of my musical journey, starting with my high school choir's annual holiday performances. Now, as an educator, I'm proud to continue this tradition with my own students. This arrangement for Concert Band and Choir allows us to explore the piece in a new way, blending the familiar choral lines with the dynamic power of a full band.

Handel composed the Messiah in just 24 days in 1741, and the "Hallelujah Chorus" quickly became one of its most iconic pieces. Tradition has it that King George II was so moved during the London premiere that he stood up, leading the audience to follow suitan act that began the custom of standing during the chorus that continues to this day. As we perform this timeless work, we connect with a piece of history that has inspired audiences for nearly three centuries, and I hope it will continue to resonate with you as deeply as it has with me.

This evocative piece for clarinet and piano was composed in heartfelt memory of Sally and David Hoke, the beloved aunt and uncle of a dear friend. Sally and David had a profound love for the beach, finding joy and solace in the rhythm of the waves and the tranquility of the shore. In crafting this composition, I sought to capture the essence of their cherished coastal sanctuary and the ebb and flow of life's tides. The music gently mirrors the serene, undulating movement of the ocean, symbolizing the constancy and change that characterize our existence. Through its melodies, listeners are invited to experience the peaceful and enduring connection that Sally and David shared with the sea, and the lasting impact they had on those who knew and loved them. This piece stands as a tribute to their memory, celebrating the beauty of their lives and the enduring nature of their spirit.

I had a lot of fun arranging this classic American Folk song for 8 part Horn Choir (and train whistle!). The use of pitch bending to create the effect of a train whistle with the choir will be a thrill for the audience. Feel free to play with dynamics and to "get in character" for the speaking parts! The more fun you have with this, the more fun the audience will have!

Woodwind Quintet

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Rondo from the Horn Quartet in E-flat Major, K. 407 is a delightful and spirited work that showcases the composer's masterful writing for the horn. Originally composed for a solo horn with strings, this piece highlights Mozart's ability to balance lyrical elegance with virtuosic flourishes.

This full orchestral arrangement expands upon the original chamber setting, enriching the texture while preserving the charm and playfulness of the Rondo. The solo horn part retains its brilliance, weaving through the orchestral fabric with both bravura and warmth. The result is a vibrant, energetic work that celebrates the expressive and technical capabilities of the horn within the grandeur of a full symphonic ensemble.

<p>"A Sailor's Hymn" is a lyrical arrangement based on the well-known U.S. Navy Hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save." This piece provides young musicians the opportunity to develop expressive playing, focusing on smooth, connected phrasing and dynamic contrast. Through this hymn-like setting, students can explore tone production and the emotional depth of their instruments, building a foundation for future musical growth. I was honored to have been asked to create this arrangment for Mrs. Heather Meelheim and the Lacey Township School's 5th Grade Band. This was the music program that I grew up in, and to be able to give music to the students in the very program that helped me fall in love with music means a great deal.</p>

A Sailor's Hymn

This composition for French Horn, Cello, and Piano seeks to capture the serene and poignant beauty of the transition from day to night. As the sun gently descends, cresting the horizon and giving way to the deepening shades of twilight, this piece evokes the quiet introspection and tranquil ambiance that accompanies the end of the day.  The composition aims to evoke a sense of calm and reflection, inviting the audience to savor the delicate balance between light and darkness, and to find solace in the natural rhythm of the passing day.

The definition of bokeh according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary; 
"the blurred quality or effect seen in the out-of-focus portion of a photograph taken with a narrow depth of field."
It wasn't until I set out to write this piece that I did research on one of my favorite photographic techniques. I always called bokeh "those cool looking out of focus lights." Once I learned the techniques name, my fascination with it grew. In my research, I found that the photographs I was drawn to the most were those of out of focus city lights, and out of focus Christmas lights. One had a frantic beauty, the other a more calming comforting beauty. All beautiful in their own unique way. I wanted to capture in music what the photographer captured in film. To capture a certain kinetic electric energy. To capture a certain kind of momentary beauty. To see through music the photographers eye.
