This piece offers students an opportunity to experience Latin music as it would occur in the Caribbean area. The interplay of the rhythmic melody with the lyrical melody later in the piece allows the students to discover intertwined melodic lines or a very simple counterpoint. Percussion is showcased in the middle followed by an opportunity for the low voices to shine. The restatement provides opportunities for dynamics fluctuation and a cute ending.

Caribbean Caper

Concert Band Score & Parts

This piece was written as a self-reflection of the composer after a trip to the wedding of a family member. The initial music is intended as a reaction to the awe upon viewing the lake where the family lives. This is followed by a theme used to simulate the travel entailed. The next theme is a response to the feelings of meeting family and friends, which leads into a setting depicting the various conversations while out on a party boat on the lake. The last section begins with a fanfare denoting the wedding in the church followed with music to relive the reception and good-byes before departure for home.

Guhn La'Key

Very ceremonial feel in the introduction and first theme. The next section allows the low voices to perform the melody. The second theme is rhythmic and allows for an interplay between the winds and the percussion. After a short drum section solo, the The third theme is introduced by the woodwinds. The theme is repeated with a descant melody followed by a repeat of the winds and percussion interplay. The piece ends with a full statement by all voices in a strong and dynamic manner.

March On

A quirky and nervous sounding piece that continues to drive to a high speed and frenetic ending. The cross talk between voices becomes intense which helps to develop the listening skills with the students. Some challenges with chromatic runs and statements, and some intense dynamic changes. An enjoyable ï¿½race to the finishï¿½ type of piece.

Frantic

This piece begins with a melody that imitates the up and down motion of a horse on a carousel, thus the title. It is basically a standard concert march with three main sections and an interlude. Each section has its own distinctive melody and character. Be warned though, that the piece contains many march-type cliches that add to the fun of playing it, and some 16th note runs for the piccolos, flutes and 1st clarinets that will test their mettle.

The Carousel March

Begun by percussion to establish a solemn feel, the hymn begins as a brass chorale with doubling by the bass clarinet. The woodwinds and xylophone then get a chance to be creative in a variation of the melody. The second theme is then introduced by the full band with dynamic shadings. Staggered entrances by the woodwinds lead to a call and answer with the brass, a short statement by the xylophone and chimes, then a final ensemble statement of the second theme. The ending is an opportunity to make a beautiful final statement.
