This beloved choral anthem for SATB and piano has been sung in countless churches, universities and other venues across the country for almost four decades.  Written by Dr. Diane White-Clayton (formerly Diane L. White), it is based on Psalm 96 verses1-4 beginning with a majestic opening and culminating with a quote from Handel's Hallelujah Chorus where the sopranos lead the choir in an exciting call-and-response declaration of "Forever and ever, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!"  Like many of her classical choral works, it incorporates subtle elements of gospel music in certain harmonic progressions, in the afore-mentioned call-and-response, and in her signature "polyphonic vamp" led by the altos singing, "For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised."  This is Diane's first anthem composed at the age of 19 while completing her sophomore year at Washington University in St. Louis.  Written at the request of Joseph Price, it was premiered by his group, the Joseph Price Singers in St. Louis, Missouri.  From its creation in1984 to the present, this anthem has continued to uplift and inspire choirs and audiences nationwide.  (In 2023, Diane created a new Christmas version, "O Sing Unto the Lord-Christmas" where she added Children's Choir and bells with full orchestration for a special for Christmas concert in Curitiba, Brazil at the Teatro Positivo with almost 300 singers.)

This piece, commissioned by Chorus Austin in memory of their beloved board member, Dr. Reuben Roosevelt McDaniel, Jr., incorporates gospel elements and welcomes but does not require improvisation in the solo, piano and congas.  With a secular text, it begins in simplicity with a slow, steady beat of unison voices, then shifts to a moving tempo with intensified rhythms, choir harmonies, and the addition of congas.

This beloved Christmas carol was arranged by Diane White-Clayton for the opening concert of the 2023 Christmas Festival in Curitiba, Brazil for a 200-voice choir and orchestra. (Orchestrated by Thomas Kresge.)  Written for SATB with soprano descant in the last chorus, it is a suitable option for a big opening or closing of a Christmas concert or as the Morning Hymn in a December church service.  Because of its familiarity and simple arrangement, it is accessible for choirs of varying levels and it welcomes  the audience or congregation singing along on the final chorus.  Also, the baritone solo of Verse 2 may be sung by all the choir's tenors and basses.  Lastly, one of the verses may be sung in another language in bilingual settings or the entire piece may be sung in another language as in the YouTube link of the premiere where it was sung in Portuguese.

"I Waited Patiently" is a sacred choral classical Psalm setting using the text of Psalm 86:11 and Psalm 40:1-4.  It is for advanced SATB a cappella double chorus with soprano and mezzo soloists. Beginning with a duet of the sopranos and altos of Choir 1, the tranquil, andante tempo takes us on a journey as the layers thicken through modulatory passages of rich jazz harmonies. During Diane's junior year in undergrad at Washington University in St. Louis, while a member of the elite Madrigal Singers under the direction of Dr. Orland Johnson, Diane was asked to write a piece for the group's upcoming tour.  It was met with such ovation, that Dr. Johnson asked her to write a second piece.  That work, "I Waited Patiently, was revised a decade later during her doctoral studies in composition at UC Santa Barbara.  It was then expanded to the current version for double choir and became a part of the collection of works that made up her dissertation.  In her notes about the piece, she wrote:  "Having two distinct choruses enabled me to thicken the harmonic texture with lush chords which I often use in my Gospel works.  The piece weaves in and out of a variety of tonal regions with tertiary relationships.  I like to compare these 'harmonic evolutions' to the changing colors of a kaleidoscope. The lesson of waiting on God can be difficult and sometimes painful to learn, but when mastered it brings great peace and serenity, serenity hopefully heard in the final 'Amens.'"

This SSATB choral anthem with piano accompaniment is based on Psalm 57 (verses 2,3, 5 &amp; 7).  With its classical influence, the virtuosic piano introduction gives way to a chorale-like opening with two homophonic verses which include gospel harmonies. The piece then builds with "My heart is fixed...", a transition beginning in unison and expanding to a climactic German 6th chord in one phrase. Shifting to 12/8, the third section features Dr. Dee's signature "polyphonic vamp" in a majestic cacophony of interweaving phrases closing with three powerful call-and-response "Amens" led by the first sopranos.
