The words of this hymn by Jeremiah E. Rankin are often sung at the end of a worship service as a Benediction.  The text is designed to give a blessing from one person to the next, "till we meet again".  The tune RANDOLPH by Ralph Vaughn Williams fit the words in an appropriate manner, with proper sentiment and dignity.  I wrote this arrangement for my sister, Marilyn Mulder, M.Mus., to play for the final worship service officiated by a beloved pastor.

I recently "discovered" this song among papers from my first Music Composition class at the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, IL.  The song is based on the poem "Into My Heart An Air That Kills" by A. E. Housman.  Recently I decided to revise the original composition but kept the music uncomplicated so the text can clearly be understood.  The poem shows someone who looks back with longing at happier days of youth, realizing there is no way to return to that wonderful time of their life.

The Children's Suite is a nostalgic look back at some of the first Sunday School songs I was taught as a child.  I remember being quite young, singing these songs as my mother accompanied me on the piano.  The following songs are included: 1) Jesus Loves Even Me, 2) Jesus, Tender Shepherd, Hear Me, 3) When He Cometh, 4) Oh, Be Careful, 5) Jesus Loves the Little Children, 6) Into My Heart, &amp; 7) Jesus Loves Me.  When playing this piece, carefully consider the tempo of each selection, as young children do not sing very fast.  Also note that the organ registrations are merely suggestions.  This piece could be used for a Service of Baptism, or an individual arrangement could be used before or after a Children's Sermon (or Talk).

Processionals usually designate a formal occasion with special significance.  In Great Britain they are usually associated with royalty.  In the United States of America we typically use them for weddings.  However, graduations, parades and the Olympics are other opportunities for us "common" people to process with the accompaniment of music.  This processional, used by a niece of mine on her wedding day, was written exactly for such an occasion as that.

Hezekiah's Prayer attempts to tell the story of the prophet Isaiah informing King Hezekiah that he is about to die.  This story can be found in II Kings 20:1-6 in the Bible.   Shortly after Isaiah leaves, Hezekiah turns his face to the wall and prays to God, "Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully", and he weeps bitterly.  God sends Isaiah back to Hezekiah and tells him, "The Lord, the God of your father David says: I have heard your prayer and I will heal you."   Hezekiah is blessed with another fifteen years of life.

The Tune: ST. EDITH was composed by Justin Krecht and revised by Edward Husband.  The lyrics for this hymn come from the "Psalter", 1912, alt. PD.  Psalm 84 is the inspiration for the text, specifically talking about the beauty of the temple of God and the desire of the writer to dwell there.  Interestingly, the second verse of this hymn speaks about how even the birds have found a place to nest in the temple and find rest.  Because of this observation, I decided to have the flute play possible bird-like calls as the violoncello plays the melody.  Just as the birds have found safety in the temple, the psalmist states that people who dwell there will be blessed and give praise to their God who shields and protects them.

O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee Is an arrangement of a familiar hymn tune, Maryton, written by H. Percy Smith.  The words were written by Washington Gladden and speak of a desire for a closer relationship with God.  In the final verse of the hymn, the author appeals to God, "With Thee, O Master, let me live."  This arrangement was written by Claude Bos for his mother, Ruth Schutler Bos, who was a church organist for forty-five years, and considered this to be her favorite hymn.

Soon-a Will Be Done is an arrangement of the traditional Spiritual of the same name for Men's Chorus.  It is scored for Tenors I &amp; II, Baritones and Bass voices.  The traditional text and melody are (mostly) used in this arrangement.  This arrangement is intended for A cappella singing; however, a piano accompaniment is provided for rehearsal and/or support.  In the audio provided you will hear simulated voices with piano.

What would make David, the King of Israel, dance?  The Ark of the Covenant had been in the hands of Israel's enemies, the Philistines.  This is the same Ark that had traveled in the desert with the Israelites for forty years and represented the presence of God.  So finally, the Ark is returning to its rightful place, Israel.  Was there music?  In II Samuel Chapter 6:5 it says, "David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals."   Therefore, David danced.

This piece for Trumpet and Piano tries to reflect the angst of Job after he has lost all his wealth, possessions and family.  The Devil challenges God to strip Job of all his blessings and predicts that Job, who is described in the Bible as "perfect and upright and one who feared God", would then curse God.  Friends and neighbors come to give Job advice but nothing they say gives him comfort.  Job laments to God, "Your hands shaped and made me.  Will you now turn and destroy me?"  (Job10:8)  Although Job, in his torment, curses the day he is born, he never curses God.  Hence, God blesses him once again with family, abundant possessions and long life.

The tune, "DUKE STREET" is most often associated with the lyrics "Jesus Shall Reign Where'er the Sun" written by Isaac Watts in 1719.  The tune, however, was first published in 1793 and attributed to John Warrington Hatton.  However, this tune now accompanies many hymn titles.  Perhaps you are familiar with "I Know that My Redeemer Lives", "Shout for the Blessed Jesus Reigns", or "My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord" (Song of Mary), all of which have been paired to "DUKE STREET".  In fact, looking through various hymnals I found an additional six hymn titles that have been "married" to John Hatton's music.  
This set of seven variations does not try to interpret the lyrics of the hymn, but provides many different musical settings based on the melody of the tune.  It all culminates in the final Variation with a grand full organ interpretation of the hymn.

Jesus Shall Reign

The lyrics for this hymn boldly state that all people should proclaim Jesus as king and "crown him Lord of all".  The first three verses are attributed to Edward Perronet with the fourth verse added by John Rippon.  I arranged seven different variations which create a variety of moods, including the fourth variation, marked "Mysterious" in a minor key.  At the conclusion of the piece, the sixth variation includes brass fanfares and the final, seventh variation, uses full organ registration to proclaim once again, "Crown him Lord of All!"

All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name

"Toccata - Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" was first performed in 1982 for an organ dedicatory recital at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Oak Lawn, IL.  Recently I took a new look at this piece and made adjustments and corrections before submitting it to My Score at J. W. Pepper.

TOCCATA - Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

While attending the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, IL, I took a private Music Composition class with Stella Roberts (a former student of Nadia Boulanger).  At some point I was working on Trio for Oboe, Clarinet and Piano.  When the score was near completion, Ms. Roberts asked if I had the time to write out the individual Oboe and Clarinet parts.  A Student Composition Recital was being planned in the near future, and she would like my music to be performed.  I wrote out the parts quickly and felt quite honored to have a "premier" at the conservatory by professional and semi-professional musicians.
The composition is in five short movements, each with its own personality.  Various Twentieth Century music techniques are used to create this "modern" piece.

The words of this hymn by Marie J. Post speak about the Grace of God which we receive through our Savior's blood.  Through the life and sacrifice of Jesus, "we are reconciled to God".  The text is based on 2 Corinthians 5:18-22.  Another lyric used with the MONKLAND melody is based on Psalm 45 titled, "For the Honor of our King".   It is not unusual for a hymn tune to have more than one lyric "married" to it's music.  There are 3 variations to this piece, which was designed to be played  consecutively.  However, each section can also stand alone, should that be desired.  The complete piece runs about 8 minutes.

Interlude with "Chorale", a short piece for organ (manuals only) is not necessarily a sacred piece.  However the middle section has the character of a Chorale, similar to that of a sacred song or hymn.  This middle section creates a strong contrast to the syncopated and jaunty melody which starts and ends the piece.

This piece was initially written as a requirement for a Music Composition class at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.  It could be for a single or group of instruments.  My mother was a  church organist and my sister, Marilyn Mulder, had previously graduated from the Conservatory with a Masters Degree in Organ.  Therefore, I decided to write this piece as a challenge for myself and for my sibling.  The real purpose in this exercise was to use various forms that many composers utilize in constructing music.  The Sonata, Scherzo and Rondo each appear in this piece.  Although these forms are very traditional, I used some modern Twentieth Century practices that interested me.  Recently I revised sections of this piece, but the form and style of the original composition are unchanged.

Christmas Suite consists of three carols arranged by Claude Bos.  They are "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen", "Lo, How a Rose" and "Angels We Have Heard on High".  They represent carols from England, Germany and France respectively.  Each carol may be played separately, or as presented here, a Christmas Suite.
