After the great success of his setting of Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra, Robert Hausmann (the dedicatee of that piece), asked Bruch to write even more music for the cello. In July of 1890 Bruch wrote two pieces for cello and orchestra: his Canzone and his Adagio on Celtic Melodies. He used material from an earlier abandoned setting he made of a Goethe play. The Canzone was published in 1891 and dedicated once more to Robert Hausmann.
