Like most band directors across the United States my school bands would march in the local Memorial Day parade. I always made sure my students understood the reason why we observed Memorial Day and why the parade always ended in a cemetery with a trumpet player playing taps while a wreath was being placed at a war monument. This work is dedicated to all of the patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. May they never be forgotten.

In this composition I wanted to create an epic-sounding work for beginner bands. Modal interchange is a music compositional technique that is commonly used in film scores and video game music. This harmonic approach creates a musical  sophistication that is very dramatic. All instruments are written in very comfortable beginner band ranges and the clarinets stay below their break. This piece only uses very basic rhythms, whole notes, half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes. There are also plenty of percussion parts to keep the percussion section busy.  Perform Game On at your next performance and  let the epic journey begin!

If you are looking for a solid rock piece for your beginner band's first concert, Band B Rockin' will do the trick. Band B Rockin' only uses the first six notes of the concert Bb scale. The rhythms for the entire piece are half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes. The wind parts are all concerted and there are plenty of percussion parts to keep the percussion section busy! <p>The bossa nova was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and so was Antonio Carlos Jobim who is considered the "father of bossa nova". From 1988-1990 I taught instrumental music at The American School in Rio de Janeiro. While teaching in Rio I heard some fabulous Brazilian musicians perform all types of music, but the bossa nova will always be my personal favorite. It has a cool, dry, sophisticated sound with jazz harmonies supporting some of the most beautiful unforgettable melodies. I tried to capture this spirit when composing Bossa Breeze.</p>

Coronation Overture was a piece I composed for my 5th grade band. This was a second year band. For the most part, all instruments stay in a one octave range. The clarinets don't play over the break. The rhythms used are limited to whole, half and eighth notes. This is a regal, majestic style piece that worked well with our first concert in December. The melodies are very basic with added counter melodies to help develop independence.  This composition is quite suitable for moving up ceremonies or graduation .

The Old Matador is a musical portrayal of a once renowned bull fighter, now a much older man, feeling a bit nostalgic about his youth. He remembers the thrill and excitement of hearing the crowds cheer as he entered the bullring. He remembers the respect and admiration the world once felt for him. Even though his days of glory are now memories, they will live on in his heart forever.

Big Bad Blues, Gonna Getcha is a swinging 12-bar blues chart in the style of Count Basie's. This is written specifically for developing middle school jazz ensembles. It serves as an engaging introduction to the fundamental techniques of a swing rhythm section. The punchy, riff-based melodies pass between the different instrument sections. This allows young players to experience the dynamic call-and-response phrasing quintessential to the Basie sound. Solo breaks, over the blues progression, provide ample opportunity for students to explore their improvisational skills. With its infectious groove and rhythmic feel, Big Bad Blues immerses young musicians in the joyful spirit of swing while building their stylistic understanding.

I wrote The Groove Team after a sixth grade oboist asked if the band
  could play something "cool". This rock solid tune with a grooving
  bass line did the trick!

My favorite place as a child was the Great South Bay in Long Island, New York. I loved playing on the beaches, going boating, and feeling the warm sun on my face. As an adult, these fond memories inspired me to write this concert march and pay tribute to The Great South!

Three Shades of Argyle is a concert band composition inspired by Argyle Park in Babylon, New York. Located on Long Island, this historic park is cherished for its scenic lake and rich community heritage. The piece is structured in three movements, each capturing a different scene from the park throughout the year.

The first movement, "Two Young Fishermen: The Almost Catch," paints a playful picture of children eagerly casting their lines into Argyle Lake. The music captures their excitement and the thrill of a near-successful catch. It's a lively and engaging portrayal of youthful anticipation.

In the second movement, "Fall Dusk: October Sunset," the music evokes the tranquil beauty of autumn. Gentle melodies reflect the falling leaves and the warm glow of an October evening sky. This movement invites listeners to experience the peaceful, reflective mood of the season.

The final movement, "The Christmas Tree Lighting: A Lot of Lights," bursts with festive energy. It celebrates the park's annual holiday tradition.  Joyful lights transform the space and the community gathers in cheerful celebration. The music captures this vibrant, spirited event with bright, lively rhythms.

Together, these movements create a musical journey through the seasons and cherished moments of Argyle Park. Band directors and students alike will find this piece both meaningful and enjoyable to perform.
