Lemon Creek, a Level 3 Concert Band piece by Steven Liotta, is a stunning composition written with beautiful harmonies throughout. For the composer, this piece is a nostalgic journey back in time, fondly remembering his walks through Lemon Creek as a young boy. The phragmites and cattails waved in the wind as flocks of birds flew overhead, creating the background music to this idyllic part of Staten Island, NY. The Alto Saxophone introduces the melody, supported by the woodwinds and the vibraphone before the brass and percussion join in. A short staccato section begins in measure 25 featuring the lower brass and lower woodwinds playing the melody. The next section (measures 33-38) should sound ethereal and the crescendo leading into the molto rit. should be nice and big. A transition section follows next from measures 43-52. Make sure the students are aware of the 2/4 measure in Measure 50. We return to the A section in measure 53 with our Alto Saxophone leading us back to the idyllic surroundings of our day at Lemon Creek.

Canto del Carcerato (Song of the Prisoner) is a 19th Century folk song from Sicily, Italy. This piece tells the story of a man being sent to jail away from his hometown of Palermo.  In the first section of the piece, the oboe sets the mood by playing a haunting melody over the drone of the lower brass and an ostinato in the percussion section. Listen for the tambourine (tamburello) and the finger cymbals (which will remind us of the prisoner's shackles) that play an integral part in this piece. The flute (friscalettu) comes in at m.13 playing the original Sicilian folk melody in G harmonic minor. The trumpets come in at m.26 taking over the folk melody and the ensemble supports them in rhythm. The dance section at m.39 is in 12/8 starts off light and as the dance goes on more instruments add on to the excitement and fun! This section also has an optional Jaw Harp (marranzanu) that will add to the authentic Sicilian sound.  There is a nice countermelody at m.71 played by the lower brass and woodwinds that sounds powerful against the melody. The dance section begins to wind down at m.76 which is slowly bringing us back to our original theme.  Our last section (m.84) has a beatutiful call and response section between the oboe and flute over the ostinato rhyhtm of the percussion section.  A final trumpet call brought back from m.26 is heard as the percussion plays on. The last note in the chimes marks the end of our prisoner's journey.

This enchanting piece for Woodwind Quintet,  is written in 7/8 , mostly in a 3+2+2 pattern, however in mm. 36-42, the accents change the feel a bit to a 2+2+3 pattern. In mm. 49-52 a new theme is stated which develops into an imitation section (mm.53-63) between the instruments of the quintet.
 
We modulate from F minor to G minor in m.74 bringing back some variations on the theme before returning back to F minor in m.101. As the piece winds down, the dynamics get softer, mirroring the gradual winding down of the garden's bustling activity. In the final moments, there's a last surge of excitementa crescendo of sound and colorbefore the Garden Dance reaches its graceful conclusion, leaving a lingering sense of wonder and tranquility.

Woodwind Quintet

Covert Ops, Rock! is a fun and exciting spy-themed piece that will entertain your students and audience alike.
Optional instruments include the Drum Set and the Electric Bass. The Drum Set can be played if you'd liket to feature a young set player or if you don't have enough percussionists to cover the parts. Everyone will want to play the Percussion 2 part because, c'mon, who doesn't love the vibraslap and the cowbell?!!
