Chant of the Sixth Patriarch is a setting of a Buddhist poem by Sixth Patriarch Hui-neng of the early Tang dynasty. According to Buddhist lore, the Fifth Patriarch proposed a poetry competition to determine his successor. The lowly, illiterate monk Hui-neng shockingly won the patriarchy, having asked another monk to transcribe his poem on a wall, which was a direct response to another front-running submission by the most esteemed scholar-monk of the monastery.
