The Pirate Suite, a 3-movement suite for string orchestra (+ drum set) is designed to introduce students to standard jazz forms and vocabulary. The different tempos and styles of the 3 movements make the suite a perfect, all-inclusive festival program. Each movement can also stand alone. Movement 1: "Undeniable Strings" is an up-tempo Bebop style melody built on classic "Rhythm Changes" form and harmony.
Movement 2: "Strolling the Street Fair" is a lush ballad that includes an emotive violin solo.
Movement 3: "Even Pirates Get the Blues" is a hard-swinging blues with a shout chorus, reminiscent of the Count Basie Orchestra.

Commissioned by The California Orchestra Directors Association Composition Consortium, Take the L.A. Train, for string orchestra (+ optional drum set), is inspired by Billy Strayhorn's Swing Era masterpiece Take the "A" Train. No improvisation required, but every section has its chance to be featured in this medium swing toe-tapper which is evocative of the famous Duke Ellington Orchestra's theme song! Composed in D-Major, this grade 3 piece expands the harmonic palette without overwhelming young musicians. Suggested fingerings are included in select passages to ease the exploration into a less familiar genre. A Cello 2 (transcribed bass) part is included as an option if bass section support or replacement is needed.

YOLA Jazz Suite

Full Orchestra Score & Parts

Composed for the Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble, this gem opens with a misterioso 12/8 minor blues which is evocative of the classic Ellington/Strayhorn orchestrations of the 1950s and '60s. The piece transitions into a double-time swing for solos and shout chorus. Features extended solo space for trumpet, guitar, and tenor, and shorter solos for drums and flute. 5 Saxophones, (optional: alto 1 double on flute), 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums.
