Roald Dahl's beloved story-turned-show is your golden ticket to producing an outrageous crowd-pleasing musical with plenty of delicious roles. With an original score by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman ("Hairspray") and a book by David Greig, this 60-minute show also features songs from the beloved 1971 motion picture. With a cast of 18 roles plus ensemble, it tells the story of the world-famous Willy Wonka opening the gates to his mysterious factory to a lucky few. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden-ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka's world of pure imagination – including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator – all to be revealed by Wonka's army of curious Oompa-Loompas.
Though both musicals are based on the classic Roald Dahl story, Willy Wonka Jr. and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Jr. are two very different shows. While both shows include the well-known songs Candy Man; I've Got a Golden Ticket; Oompa Loompa and Pure Imagination, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Jr. has a reimagined score, 18 roles plus ensemble, and the book is a much closer adaptation to the original novel. For 24 roles plus ensemble, Willy Wonka Jr.'s music and lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and feature many of the songs made famous by the same duo for the 1971 film "Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory."
