In painting, chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrasts between light and
dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.
"Chiaroscuro", an a capella SATB work from American composer P. F.
Strohm, contrasts the effects of light
in three movements: 1)
"Light", which imagines the first use of speech to describe
the feeling of light; 2) "Shadows", written from the view of a
thoughtful prisoner in Plato's Allegory of the Cave; and 3) "Faded
Figure", which presents the musings of a pentimento figure in a painting
who was first visible then covered over by the artist in pursuit of
chiaroscuro effects. You or your mixed choir may see other allegories--try
"Chiaroscuro" and see what they say! The score includes rehearsal
piano. The level of difficulty is Medium. Performance time is 4:52. Member,
ASCAP.
