This work commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first controlled flight by an aircraft using its own power. The first movement,  "Inspirations" musically represents the influences on our imagination to fly like a bird. The second movement, "Experiments" begins with a four-measure theme that goes through a number of transformations throughout the movement. It represents the basic idea of the Wright Flyer and its adjustments made to enable it to fly with control. The last movement, "Triumphs" alternates a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 with a sustained melody of flight.

This three movement sonata was dedicated to Harvey Phillips. The first movement has a rhythmic opening theme followed by a shorter lyrical idea. The development works both thematic ideas greatly expanding each. The second movement is very song-like. The last movement combines a rondo form in 6/8 with a passacaglia in 3/4.

Comes with both a C trumpet and a Bb trumpet part - <i>Avalon</i> is the legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It was the place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. The composition's structure is more influenced by the rhetorical device of anaphora than by any specific musical form. Anaphora consists of a repeated sequence of words that begins a series of neighboring clauses, thereby lending them emphasis. The open motive, stated by the trumpet alone, is the anaphora phrase that represents the magical and mysterious qualities of <i>Avalon.</i> It occurs three additional times in its entirety, though slightly transformed by the use of additional harmony. It also permeates other parts of the composition, but in a less recognizable fashion. Each time it is used, the material that follows it develops freely. The other unifying device used is a figure of a dotted eighth and sixteenth followed a long note a perfect fifth higher. This motive represents the sword Excalibur and all the good deeds King Arthur is known for. It appears seven times during the composition, mostly in a gentle context that only hints of the heroic deeds to come. Around two-thirds through the composition, the motive develops into its full-blown heroic nature. It is also used as the final notes, sounding a benediction to the work of King Arthur.

This composition was composed for Jim Hopper at Boise State University and was recorded by John Russo on the CRS label. In 1996, it was awarded 5th prize in the Britten-On-The-Bay Composition Contest. A lyrical lento begins the work. A vigorous allegro follows after a short cadenza. A brief return to the lento closes the work.

Ode To Music for Men's Chorus

A transcription for woodwind quintet of this lively movement that was meant to be performed between parts one and two of Handel's Ode. The concertino parts are mainly in the flute oboe and bassoon but the other instruments have sections of the solo parts in order to rest the concertino instruments. This transcription makes a great opener closer or encore piece.

This work was composed for David and Dorinne Bilger. It was first recorded by the Bilger Duo on their album The Bilger Duo Plays Recital Favorites. As the title implies this composition is a dialogue between the two instruments first tender and intimate and then more animated. A return to intimacy returns in the middle with new material and at the end with a recapitulation of the opening ideas. It was recorded again on compact disc by the Swiss Duo Dilemme in 1996 and has been re-released in 2000 on the AUR label as part of their Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax series.

String Orchestra Score & Parts

This is a band transcription of an orchestral work that was composed during August and September of 1995 in honor of WITF-FM's 25th Anniversary. It was selected as the winning composition in WITF-FM's Composition Competition from a field of over forty international entries and received its premiere by the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Richard Westerfield conducting on April 23 1996. This six minute overture alternates sections of fanfare-like figures with sections of playful rhythms and counterpoint. The overall form consists of two main sections that contrast each other and a middle section that serves as a development of previously stated material. The composition is an economical one as its material is derived primarily from the opening brass fanfare and the woodwind counter melody. The modal melodic and harmonic material is interwoven with polyrhythm imitation counterpoint and timbre changes to create a composition reflective of the excitement of this celebration.
