A commission for my patron Celia Volk, who wanted a fanfare that could bring back the audience at the end of intermission. The piece is entirely in "Ritusen" pentatonic (1, 2, 4, 5, 6), which was a fun challenge and--I feel--gives the piece a unique and distinct sound.
This music is inspired by Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" (same instrumentation, minus one trumpet) and by the brass music of Chris Hazell, as well as (of course) by John Williams.
Comeback Fanfare was premiered at the Tualatin Valley Symphony's first concert after being shut down by the COVID19 pandemic, making the title "Comeback Fanfare" even more meaningful.
