The Anima Christi prayer, attributed to Pope John XXII (1244-1334), and
translated by J. Hegarty, is presented here in this attractive, melodic
setting by Ephrem Feeley & Christian Leanos.
This setting utilises both chanted verses in English and Spanish (which
closely follow the original
text) and a metrical version (which uses the Hegarty translation). In
performance, either may be sung
- or indeed both, if the occasion requires a more substantial piece. The
chanted verses must be sung
freely, following the rhythm of the verses as if spoken. The metrical
verses may be sung by a cantor,
or section of the choir. This haunting piece is suitable as a communion
processional, or as a reflective hymn
during adoration. It is scored for cantor, SAB choir, assembly, and piano,
with a plaintive oboe part throughout.
