Throughout history, humans have been forced to flee from their homelands to seek refuge in order to provide freedom and safety and the opportunity for their families to survive and prosper. There are many reasons such as famine, poverty, war or oppressive regimes that families leave everything they own and are familiar to them for a new start in a strange land.
"Farewell to Skibbereen" is an Irish folksong where a father and his son have a dialogue about why they fled Ireland, during the famine and British oppression.
This arrangement is dedicated to all refugees through time and yet to come, their struggles, and their contributions to the world.

Avalon is a popular jazz standard written by Al Jolson, Buddy DeSilva and Vincent Rose in 1920. It has been recorded and performed by countless artist and has appeared in many musicals and films over the years. This arrangement is an accessible version in a fast swing to introduce younger students to this great standard. There is a saxophone soli feature and an solo section open for any instruments. There are also optional written solos for trumpet and tenor sax for those students not yet comfortable with improvisation.

Sleepy Hollow portrays the story of Ichabod Crane being chased through Sleepy Hollow by the Headless Horseman from the short story by Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The driving rhythms and detached style represent the racing of the horses through the forest. The introduction of the Dies Irae theme represent the darkness and impending doom of the Headless Horseman as he pursues Ichabod Crane through the woods of Sleepy Hollow.
The work is a great introduction to the detached style and accents for the beginning string ensemble and is in E Dorian to create a dark modal feel.  A Great addition to your Fall Concert.
