SATB a cappella settings of three ancient Latin texts in a style reminiscent of Renaissance polyphony, mixing dissonant and tonal harmonies in a challenging but singable texture. Melodies are often disjunct, even passing from section to section, but always lyrical and poignantly expressive. De castitatis thalamo, virgo virginum, and Ave Maria. Francisco Lopez Capillas (1608-1674) is widely believed to be the first native-born New World composer, and his works for double choir are among his most beautiful works. Capillas served as chapelmaster at the Cathedral of Mexico City for many years, accounting for the addition of Capillas to his name. The double chorus works, however, were probably composed for the Cathedral of Puebla, where he served before going to Mexico City.

DURATION: 4:00. Multiple divisi lines in soprano and alto and unison tenor/bass create a effective textural setting of this text from Isaiah 42: "Behold my servant, whom I uphold: my chosen one in whom I delight." SSSSAAAB unaccompanied.

DURATION: 13:00. Joseph Weber composed his Symphony for Band (also titled Symphony #1 for Band) in 1956 for Edwin C. Kruth and the San Francisco State College Symphonic Band, and revising it in 1962. It is rhythmic and colorful, with hints of Bernard Herrmann film scores, but also foreshadows the patternistic, minimalist works of Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and other San Francisco composers with whom Weber was associated throughout the 1960's. This performance edition was created by Steven Paxton for  Creative Spirit's JOSEPH WEBER ARCHIVES series.

SYMPHONY FOR BAND, Op. 19

DURATION: about 3 minutes. The text for How Can I Keep from Singing was written by members of the Derventio Choir of Allestree, Derbyshire, England, and Steven Paxton's setting was composed for the competition celebrating that choir's 30th anniversary. Moderate tempo acappella sections alternate with fast, rhythmically driving sections mixing 6/8 and 5/8 meters. The piano accompaniment is challenging, but worth it.

DURATION: 8:15.  Atmospheric pattern-based music: a slow-moving, tender chorale, followed by perpetually evolving scalar patterns above slow-moving drones. In addition to this version for solo piano, Chorale with Alleluias has been scored for piano trio as well as a number of other ensembles, and can even be customized for particular combinations of instruments. DURATION: 2:00. KONIKONECO (SATB) is a traditional call-and-response song of the Teso people, who live in eastern Uganda and in western Kenya. The lyrics, from the Ateso language combined with borrowings from other languages and dialects, roughly translates as "Let us celebrate our schools, our learning, and our empowerment." The piano accompaniment suggests the arpeggios typical of Ugandan hand-held harps (a'dungu). Other instruments, especially drums and shakers, may be added to the accompaniment, and the choral part itself includes body percussion in one section. (Also available for 3-Part Mixed or TTB chorus.)

DURATION: 2:30. PASQUE FLOWER IN APRIL (SATB) There is beauty and thoughtful reflection packed into this two-page setting of a poem by New Mexico poet Becky Nystrom. Frances Meier, a composer, organist, and teacher based in Los Alamos, New Mexico, has infused her setting of a poem about a mountain flower with unique harmonies, skillfully crafted voice-leading, and engaging word painting.

PASQUE FLOWER IN APRIL for SATB choir

In the early 1920s Spanish composer Fernando Obradors composed several collections of art songs based on old Spanish poetry. Steven Paxton has arranged five of these for treble choir and piano. The music is tender and sometimes playful, and the colorful piano accompaniment offers an opportunity to feature an accomplished collaborative pianist.

    Three movements from Mahler's 1885 in a transcription for concert band: At
  a Wedding, and Farewell. All of the songs have the flavor of folk music, with
  pentatonic melodies and gentle, simple harmonies. But in Mahlers hands this
  musical language becomes evocative and almost impressionistic, full of
  contrasts between simple joy and tragic sorrow. And always nostalgic in a
  Mahleresque way. These adaptations/transcriptions by Steven Paxton provide a
  way to introduce band musicians to the music of a great European master
  composer who did not himself compose for band.

SONGS OF A WAYFARER

DURATION: 6:00. Based on the American hymn tune "Idumea," Rhapsody on a Shape-Note Hymn captures the vigor and poignancy of this unique type of American sacred music, while also exploring some newer elements of arhythmic, free-form composition. Joseph Weber composed his original trio version (for two violins and double bass) in 1988, and that version is also available from Creative Spirit. The hymn "Idumea" itself gained renewed recognition as part of the soundtrack for the 2003 film Cold Mountain, in which it was performed by The Sacred Harp Singers.

DURATION: 2:30. Steven Paxton's RAINDROP SONG is a setting of a whimsical poem by Texas poet Chris Willerton, about a talking raindrop. This short, delightful work for treble choir requires a good pianist, and includes short spoken segments for individual speaker as well as full choir.

DURATION: 10 minutes.  A challenging, thoughtful major work for concert band by Steven Paxton. Rhythmic and melodic patterns and layers build to a near chaotic climax, followed by a minimalistic, evocative, calm resolution. Think drought, approaching storm, gentle and welcome rain.

DURATION: 3:30.  SSA settings, with piano accompaniment, of texts by e. e. cummings (in Just), Thomas Dekker (The Merry Month of May), and from Genesis 1:11-12 (First Spring). The style is rhythmically intricate, includes spoken passages, and is rooted in an expanded tonality; the piano accompaniment is virtuosic.

THREE SPRING SONGS for SSA choir and piano

DURATION: approximately 2:00. A more challenging work for chorus with overtone singing by Stuart Hinds. The text for this thoughtfully structured work is artfully based on a quotation from 20th century Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce: "There is nothing true in the world except beauty."

As in Hinds's other choral works, choice of overtones is at times improvised and at other times carefully prescribed, allowing for a practical and accommodating way of introducing singers to this stunning genre of choral music.

DURATION: 7:30. Steven Paxton's River of Peace evolves gradually from mysterious drones, to cloudy hymn tune fragments, to a direct presentation of the beautiful hymn "Like a River Glorious," and finally to filigreed rhythmic fabric based on melodic cells from the hymn. In each segment considerable freedom is given to sections and to individual singers to determine entrances and dynamics, and the entire vocal sound fabric is underlaid with both sustained and rhythmic textures played by piano, organ, and optional synthesizer. Contemplative, evocative collage-music.

ARIRANG is a collective name for hundreds of Korean folk songs; some are
  ancient traditional songs and others are newer. The Gangwondo Arirang, with
  its distinctive rhythm of two unequal beats (3 subdivisions + 2 subdivisions)
  and the well-known Bonjo Arirang are here arranged for 5-part FLEX ENSEMBLE
  of winds and strings, with optional parts for percussion, guitar, and
  piano.
